ma modular: Blue Crest open house photos

Posted on May 25, 2011

Thank you to all who attended the Blue Crest open house Saturday. Many of you asked how customizable the ma homes are. During Design, we’ll work with you to assess whether one of our standard plans will fit your space needs, budget and property configuration or whether it’s more appropriate to design a semi-custom plan. For an additional fee, we can design a completely custom plan. Our partner manufacturers and site crews are very flexible — if we can dream it, they can build it. The Blue Crest house is proof!

Ruth house delivered and set

Posted on March 23, 2011

The ma modular Ruth house — an 850 sq ft 2 bed, 1.5 bath guest house — was delivered and crane set today! The house is a Texas “dog trot”-style home. Dog trot homes consist of two separate living areas under one roof, separated by a wide gallery. One of the living areas contains sleeping accommodations; the other is where the family cooks, eats and entertains. The homes were designed so that family dogs could trot back and forth in the gallery instead of running around the house. The Ruth house “gallery” will be used as a screened porch, which opens up the home to pleasant North/South breezes.

Creating an energy model for your home

Posted on March 2, 2011

We’re happy to announce that ma modular’s parent company, KRDB Architects, was the winner of Builder magazine’s challenge for innovation and efficiency under 1600 SF. The winning house is located in the SOL Austin neighborhood (www.solaustin.com). SOL was developed by KRDB and builder Beck-Reit and Sons.

View the Feb 2011 issue online: http://mydigimag.rrd.com/publication/frame.php?i=60846&p=74&pn=&ver=flex

Through projects like SOL, KRDB has developed an energy modeling system that we can apply to every project to determine the best options for heating, cooling, insulation, windows, electricity, hot water, etc. This energy model is a propriety tool developed over the last 10 years of designing/building sustainable homes. It can help our clients make the best decisions on what materials/systems to invest in that will meet both short-term budget goals and long-term utility bill goals. This service is offered to both our KRDB and ma modular clients.

The Blue Crest house has been delivered and set

Posted on February 14, 2011

Last week, two flat bed semis arrived at the Blue Crest job site carrying the Blue Crest house, wrapped in Green Guard, 80% complete. There was some nail biting as Mod 1 was picked up from the truck bed, but 5 minutes later it was set on the foundation. Less than 2 hours later, Mod 2 was set on top of Mod 1.

Jim Bruno (www.jimbruno.com), a filmmaker who is documenting the Green building movement, stopped by and very generously shot and assembled this video for ma modular: http://vimeo.com/19729209

Site work continues this week. As of today, the stair connector and screened porch have been framed and the windows have been uncovered. ma modular uses Gerkin windows (aaron@rhinoaustin.com), which are NFRC rated and have excellend U and SHGC ratings. They are thermally broken and use Cardinal 366 glass.

Blue Crest house to be delivered this week

Posted on January 31, 2011

If the rain/sleet holds off, the houses surrounding the Blue Crest lot will have a new neighbor by the end of the week. Not-so-subtle signs of new construction have been apparent for a few weeks now, most notably the parade of trucks: trucks with giant drill bits, trucks carrying lumber, trucks with bellies full of cement…Slowly, the outline of a foundation is taking shape. I can imagine a few neighbors are thinking, “I’m going to have to keep my windows closed to get any peace and quiet this Spring…” Little do they know, and how surprised they will be, when the Blue Crest house arrives later this week, 80% complete!

The parade of trucks will end in a grand finale consisting of two flat bed semis and a crane. The house, which has been under construction at the manufacturing plant for the past month, will be set via crane on the foundation, and the final touches like integral color stucco and Rainscreen Hardie will be applied. By March, the site will be ready for sod and plantings. By April, the deck and the screened porch will no doubt be the two favorite rooms in the house, as the owners — alongside their neighbors — will relax and enjoy their peaceful new surroundings.
